Highland County officially launched its participation in the America 250-Ohio commemoration with a community Heritage Tree Planting Ceremony at Liberty Park in Hillsboro on Friday, September 26, 2025. The event marked the start of the county’s America 250 planning and featured the planting of 18 White Oak trees — one for Highland County and one for each of its 17 townships — as part of the statewide Heritage Tree Program. The planting site is located east of the Highland County Family YMCA’s gravel parking lot at 201 Diamond Drive.
Community members, township representatives, and local officials gathered for remarks and a ceremonial planting that highlighted the significance of the White Oak, Ohio’s state tree, chosen for its longevity and historical meaning.
“These trees represent both our roots and our legacy,” said Brad Roades, President of the Highland County Board of Commissioners. “They’re a symbol of our commitment to preserving history and building a strong future.”
“The roots of these trees will grow deep like our love of country,” said Alex Butler, Highland County Auditor and Master of Ceremonies. “They will grow and stand tall and strong like the legacy of our forefathers. May the spirit of ’76 be reborn in our hearts today and may we commit our own lives to the service of our nation.”
The ceremony also served as the official kickoff to Highland County’s planning for a multi-day celebration July 17–18, 2026, honoring the nation’s 250th anniversary. Announced elements include:
“Thank you to our community partners, township leaders, and volunteers who helped us plant the first seeds of this celebration,” said Jamie Wheeler, Executive Director of the Visitors Bureau of Highland County. “This is a meaningful start to America 250 in Highland County, and we’re excited to build toward memorable July 2026 experience.”
Highland County residents, businesses, and civic groups will have opportunities to get involved through volunteer roles, sponsorships, and program participation leading up to the July 2026 celebration.
